What If We Spent as Much Time Creating the Life Between Vacations as We Do Planning Them?
A reflection on creating an everyday family life that feels just as meaningful as the adventures we plan.

Most of us spend a lot of time planning our next vacation.
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a running list of places you’d love to visit, restaurants you want to try, and experiences you hope your family will remember forever.
I love that.
Planning a trip is part of the fun.
But over the last few years, I’ve found myself asking a different question.
What if we spent as much time creating the life between vacations as we do planning the vacations themselves?
Not because vacations aren’t important.
They absolutely are.
Travel stretches us. It teaches us. It gives us perspective. It creates stories we’ll tell around the dinner table for years to come.
But eventually, every trip comes to an end.
The suitcases are unpacked.
The laundry gets done.
The calendars fill back up.
Life begins again.
And somewhere along the way, I started wondering…
What if “real life” didn’t have to feel like something we were constantly trying to get away from?
What if our homes weren’t simply the places we returned to, but places we were intentionally shaping into something meaningful?
Not Instagram-worthy.
Just meaningful.
A place where conversations happen around the dinner table.
Where family traditions take root.
Where children have space to imagine, explore, and simply be.
Where ordinary Tuesdays matter just as much as the vacations we’ve spent months looking forward to.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that everyday life and adventure aren’t competing with one another.
They actually make each other better.
Travel reminds us how big the world is.
Home reminds us why it matters.
Adventure helps us see life through fresh eyes.
The ordinary moments give those adventures somewhere to belong.
I don’t have this figured out.
In fact, one of the reasons I started writing is because I’m still figuring it out.
I’m learning to be more present.
I’m learning that meaningful memories don’t always require plane tickets or passports.
I’m learning that some of the moments my children may remember most aren’t the biggest ones, but the ones we almost overlooked.
A game around the table.
A walk after dinner.
An unhurried Saturday.
A family road trip.
A tradition we repeat every year without realizing one day it will become part of our children’s story.
I don’t think the answer is to stop traveling.
If anything, I hope our family keeps exploring the world for years to come.
I just don’t want vacations to be the only times we’re fully living.
I want our everyday life to be worth remembering, too.
Maybe that’s why you’re here.
Maybe you’ve found yourself wondering if life has become a little too rushed.
Maybe you’ve caught yourself counting down to the next vacation before the last one is even over.
Or maybe, like me, you’re simply asking whether there’s another way.
Not a perfect life.
Not a slower life just for the sake of slowing down.
But a life built around what matters most to your family.
One where adventure has its place.
Home has its place.
And gratitude grows in both.
That’s what Miles of Memories & Co. is really about.
Not choosing between home and travel.
Not choosing between ordinary days and extraordinary adventures.
But learning to appreciate both.
Because I have a feeling the memories we’ll treasure most won’t come from choosing one or the other.
They’ll come from building a life where each makes the other even more meaningful.
With love,
Michaela
